8:20: Confirm misfiring cylinder in xB is the coil replaced about 6 months ago.
8:30: Pull defective coil, hop in ‘64 pickup.
8:40: Arrive at Advance auto, explain coil is defective. Manager pulls a replacement coil off the shelf, hands me new coil out of the box and takes bad coil, doesn’t even bother to look up if I bought it from them or not.
8:50: Return home, install coil, confirm xB’s engine is running properly.
9:00: Leave for partner’s place with tools & spare coil for her Prizm.
9:45: Arrive at her place, replace bad coil in *her* car, confirm Prizm is now running properly.
10:00: Head home.
10:45: Arrive home, dread work tomorrow.

Was it a cheap Chinese coil?
You should’ve gotten Denso.

I was the only thing available when the coil failed, I’ll probably be ordering a Denso in the near future.

Misfires must be a thing right now. My girlfriend’s car was throwing a code for cylinder 4, so I swapped the coil packs around and the code followed the coil pack. I ordered a full set for $50 shipped. Waiting for those to arrive so I can get that off my plate.
The HEMIWagon is throwing codes for fuel delivery. Definitely need to do something about the fuel pump/filter. First it tells me it’s running lean, then it tells me it’s running rich, and after about 4 days of clearing codes it will run normally again. That car is such a PITA when it sits for a few days when I take the SL out.
But the SL is even more of a PITA when it sits because right now I have to do the accumulators on all 4 corners and replace the hydraulic fluid so that the ADS starts to work 100% normally again. Also need to do the brakes, fluids and fan clutch. When that’s all done I get some paint work done...I forsee a very expensive couple of months coming..
And because it can only get better, my girlfriend’s mom’s car needs a new O2 sensor. At least it’s up front and I only need to get the socket for it. I cleared the code to see if it was just a fluke though, will have to check again in a couple of days.
About the parts store, if the manager remembers seeing you, he probably wont go through the trouble of looking up parts. Packaging or certain brands can also be a dead giveaway, while some parts stores will have the same brands, sometimes a parts store knows they carry a certain thing in stock from a certain brand and no other local stores do, so there’s not much checking to do. And least of all, sometimes these parts cost so little it makes no difference to them.
Worst of all though, 1:45 drive home? I hope there was a pit stop somewhere along the way. My drive home from the lady’s place is 45 mins, and I’m wiped out when I get home. Completely and totally.

Yeah right now her Prizm & my xB are throwing codes left & right. With her car I’m not surprised as the engine was failing, then blew up, then we swapped in a used engine. So I’m chasing a bunch of codes from all those issues.
My xB has decided that 8 years of reliable operation is enough and it is time for everything to break. In addition to the coil issue there is a code being thrown for the fuel tank vent purge that also randomly makes it very hard to fill the tank, and a rear shock bushing is disintegrating making it sound like the rear axle is falling off on every bump.
I fixed the timeline, it should have been 45min to home, but that drive always *feels* longer. She actually lives ~5 min closer than she used to, but the new drive always feels like it takes longer even if it is actually shorter.
